May, 2008
This season we ran two club tournaments instead of our usual three. Both tournaments consisted of the usual afternoon’s friendly but competitive tennis, followed by a very sociable barbecue and a few beers enjoyed under the shade of our splendid gazebo.
The first of our tournaments this year, the Men’s and Ladies’ Doubles championships in May, was so popular that we had to start earlier in order to accommodate all those who wished to play. In all we had 20 men and 16 ladies playing in the tournaments with many children enjoying the sunshine and playing tennis after the adults had finished and were enjoying a well-earned drink. This year we had new winners in both tournaments. The ladies’ tournament was won by Shirley Parker-Smith and Mandy Hambidge who played consistently well all afternoon. The men’s tournament was won by Andrew Gentry and Simon Stokoe, showing that the club is gaining in strength as well as numbers.
Our mixed doubles tournament was played in July. We had so many men wanting to play that we had to have a separate unofficial men’s doubles tournament going on at the same time as the mixed doubles. As in previous years, the ladies drew their men out of a hat so that no-one was playing with their usual partners. The mixed doubles tournament was won once again by Simon Parker-Smith, this time playing with Carol Rawnsley who played very well and was celebrating her birthday on the same day. They defeated Gina Aldridge and David Bruton in a hard fought final.
